It finally happened a week ago – our silent Sophia barked!
At first it was a funny noise bubbling up from deep inside her throat, and to be honest, we were not certain what had made such a silly noise. But the signs were unmistakable: Sophia, with her full attention fixed on Emma, was practicing until the sounds came out loud and clear. The funny thing is that Sophia initially startled herself with her unexpected bark.
Yesterday, during Emma’s weekly visit, Sophia could not stop herself from exercising her newly found voice and she barked and barked and barked. I don’t get annoyed easily with my girl, but she put up such a racket that I had to sharply tell her NO. Well, she got the message and stopped only to bark again when she thought Emma was hogging all of Greg’s attention.
I find it most intriguing that Sophia shows no interest in barking when Greg plays with Lilly. Could this behaviour be a Berner rivalry? Could it be due to the fact that Emma largely gives Sophia the cold shoulder? Or is it because Emma takes over all the placed Sophia loves: her water bowl, her kitchen corner, her sleeping crate, her favorite place under my desk?
There is no telling how this Berner relationship will evolve – we’ll just have to wait and see. I am intrigued!
