Spring at Sontheim does not really start until the first hummingbird has returned from its long winter migration to South America. This year has been a two-week watch and wait for the first male to be spotted. He arrived late on Friday in the middle of a thunderstorm’s downpour.
I spotted him first as a moving speck on the Oriole feeder and had confirmation after the rain when he visited the hummingbird feeder in front of the kitchen window.
This year is very different from the last few years in which the Orioles arrived with the first hummingbirds. This year however there is not one Oriole in sight and the only birds visiting the Oriole feeders are the local woodpeckers. I know its hard to believe, but two of our three woodpecker species have taken a liking to the sweet stuff, sugar-water and grape jelly alike.
But while the wait for the Orioles’ return continues I am so very happy to know that our first Hummingbird has safely arrived at Sontheim. Let the fun of watching them begin!!!
