The prairie is in full bloom and our Hummers have all but disappeared. This annual ritual usually provides me with a much-needed break from preparing sugar-water, cleaning feeders and making sure none of the birds go hungry at day-break when it is most crucial for them to get instant energy. Day-break at Sontheim in Summer happens around five AM and it’s a good thing that the girls and I are used to getting up with the sun, otherwise, this would be a hardship.
This year however I am not in need of a break because a dozen Hummingbirds are easy to feed. Here are a few pictures of the birds at prime feeding time, a few days before they disappeared into the prairie.
