The prairie is in full bloom and our Hummers have all but disappeared. This annual ritual usually provides me with a much-needed break from preparing sugar-water, cleaning feeders and making sure none of the birds go hungry at day-break when it is most crucial for them to get instant energy. Day-break at Sontheim in Summer happens around five AM and it’s a good thing that the girls and I are used to getting up with the sun, otherwise, this would be a hardship.
This year however I am not in need of a break because a dozen Hummingbirds are easy to feed. Here are a few pictures of the birds at prime feeding time, a few days before they disappeared into the prairie.

Off course, the boys have to display their prowess.

Great pictures in both this posting and the previous one. Interesting that the humming birds appear, stay around for a while, and then disappear. Do they come back later in summer/autumn on their way south again?
Keith, they do not leave the area until they migrate back to the South in autumn.
Our hummers are merely taking advantage of the nectar they can get from all the blooming prairie flowers at this time of year. Right now our prairie is stunningly beautiful and buzzing with birds, butterflies, and all sorts of bugs.
